
DeWitt first appeared on stage at the age of 13. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. When she performed in her summer stock she was persuaded by the director to enroll at UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt has claimed that she didn't meet the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She was employed as an assistant secretary while at UCLA. The role she played by DeWitt as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 period is among her most well-known. She was part of the show's pilot and then was hired. DeWitt also appeared as Janet in an episode of the show in 1979. spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt was the final actor to appear in the series' 1984 finale. Then, she appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that she was off acting for a number of years. The stage was her first time back to the stage in June 1991 when she was a performer on a Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Then, she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! A character based on her, voiced and voiced by another actress, was in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She was featured in an episode of Cybill and made a brief appearance on Living Single's last episode. Her 2000s work includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
